Flower Mosaic.....Again!

I want to just add this to my last blog.  The flower mosaic was greatly appreciated by the 89 year old grandmother of a friend of mine.  It is really difficult to know exactly what people want when they ask you to do a mosaic.  I knew a little about the lady I was doing it for.  Her age, her love of pinks and purple and her passion for her garden.  With this in mind, it developed into something that has been gratefully received and will be treasured for a long time.  This has made me very happy, that is all I can ask for!

Flower Mosaic Finished!

Sticking tessarae down with cement based adhesive

Grouting

Grouting....took absolutely ages because you have to sculpture the grout around the shapes....phew!

The finished mosaic.  The design had to change because when I came to sticking down, everything sort of moved.  I was a bit annoyed as I did prefer the original pattern.  I hope my friend's Nan likes it!

Cutting Out

Spent today cutting most of the tessarae out and seeing how the colours mixed and to give me some idea of how this is going to look.  I think I may cut small pieces of mirror and place them around the outside just to lift the whole arrangement away from the grey of the slate.  Notice that the shapes that I have cut out do not match the original drawing, I hope the white ink comes off!!!

Too Many Things On The Go!

Nothing goes to plan does it, well not in my life!  I have made a few mosaics but still haven't grouted them, they are waiting in a very patient queue at the moment but time is getting on and I must, as they say, get around to it!  I have just been asked by a friend to do a flower mosaic for her Gran to go outside so this is the first picture of a basic idea.  I have photographed it outside just now to see how the colours look in the sunshine....yes, don't faint...sunshine has actually arrived here in Cornwall after a week or two...we have been having very yukky mists for a while.  I am going to add a small blue butterfly to this design as well and maybe some mirror to bring it to life.  I only have a week to do this in so I am going to be busy.  With a mosaic that is going outside onto slate, I shall use a cement based adhesive and then grout it afterwards.  All the materials will weather well in the frosts but in really bad conditions, it is probably best to protect or bring inside.

Changed my blog!

Hedgerow Heather Bunting

Welcome to my new blog!  I have started the New Year with a lot of ideas, all inspired by what I see and experience in Cornwall.  Winter is a beautiful time of the year, full of colour and form, if you just go outside and look closely.  There is so much detail in everything and the smells....gorgeous.  I have just finished some mosaic bunting.  My influence is the heather found in the Cornish hedges.  I have used some beautiful shiny tiles and feel that the colours match the shades and hues of the flowers, in sunshine and in the mists that surround the moors.  I have also been determined to get some unfinished mosaics done and have, amazingly for me, achieved that this week!  A beach hut parade, a LOVE plaque and a VW campervan clock.  I just have to grout them all!  The beach huts remind me of hot sunny days, sand in your toes and that lovely burnt feeling that I always get when I go to the beach!  In the meantime, I shall just look at them and wait!
